Sounds of the Times: Symphonic Cabaret
November 13, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
HK Gruber makes his anticipated return to New World Symphony as both conductor and composer. After a near-100-year mystery—in a story of lost scores, WWII and forgotten safes—Kurt Weill’s Little Magic Night Music at long last receives its U.S. premiere. HK Gruber’s own Northwind Pictures pits nature against humanity using wind machines and music boxes. Jonathan Bailey Holland’s Halcyon Sun, a vibrant musical light at the end of a tunnel, was written for the opening of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Pianos and vibraphones pair up for Steve Reich’s churning Quartet.
