iLe’s voice is the instrument of a time traveler, traversing back-to-the-future Latin music with beautiful melodies and powerful messages. She visits the North Beach Bandshell with her band on February 21, touring in support of her second release “Almadura (which was just nominated for 2020 Grammy)” the evolution of an artist carrying forth Puerto Rico’s musical heritage.
As a young teen, iLe (then known as sassy rapper PG-13) sang with Calle 13, the legendary reggaeton group formed by her older brothers Residente and Visitante. But with her 2016 solo debut, fans expecting Latin hip hop were surprised by a torchy time warp. With gorgeous old-school boleros and bugalu, iLevitable won the 2017 Grammy, for Best Latin alternative. Like Calle 13, it was also a family affair – produced with her brothers; the album featured songs written by her sister Milena, their father Joey Cabra, and even their grandmother Flor Amelia de Gracia, an artist from Puerto Rico in the 1950s and 60s.
