Art Opening – ‘African Victorian’ by Tamary Kudita
November 20, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Join Hotel Co-owner, Lesley Goldwasser (curator of The Betsy’s Art Exhibitions), for a very special evening.
Meet Tamary Kudita, The SONY World Photography Open Photographer of the Year 2021.
She is the visionary behind “African Victorian’, a collection of unforgettable photographic images installed at The Betsy for Miami Art Week 2021.
Tamary will be present to greet guests and answer questions about her work.
“My work attempts to convey a truthful narrative and demonstrate how I engage with issues of invisibility, re-contextualization, and appropriation to preconceived ideas of black personhood. I look at how our unchosen histories have shaped our contemporary state. Furthermore, my work speaks directly to the common reality amongst people of color of an ‘obscured history.’” (Tamary Kudita)
Tamary Kudita (b. 1994) was recently named Open Photographer of the Year at the 2021 Sony World Photography Awards. She was born in Zimbabwe and traces her ancestry to Orange Free State, historical Boer state in Southern Africa. Kudita received collegiate education at Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town, graduating in 2017. She maintains an active studio practice in photography, exhibiting widely in Africa.
