Room for Storms
Digital Projection, MP4
Avalon Hotel, 700 Ocean Drive
In Room for Storms, video footage recorded by a satellite belonging to the National Oceanic And Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of one year of hurricanes, transforms into a cinematic experience. The view from NOAA’s the satellite camera is the North Eastern Seaboard, from the Carribean to Nova Scotia, and halfway across the Atlantic. In previous iterations in New York and Mexico City, I presented it both indoors and outdoors, transforming small gallery spaces and a harbor side park into make-shift cinemas. I commissioned soundtracks from musicians which were performed live, just like in silent cinemas. Audiences who have experienced hurricanes on the ground, had the opportunity to sit with their emotions from a bird’s eye view. I’ve been looking for a way to do a version in Miami Beach. I would love to commission Cuban musicians, and have already been in contact with several. A projection outdoors at a beach front hotel would be spectacular. The scale is very flexible. It could be in a courtyard playing to a few chairs installed, or it could be projected large on an architectural surface.
