ART WEEK 2022

Art Week Miami Beach 2022 will offer internationally renowned programming and exhibitions, from the opening of a monumental public artwork by Jaume Plensa in Pride Park to new temporary public art installations by FriendsWithYou and Edouard Duval-Carrié. Returning for its fourth year is the increasingly popular Miami Beach Legacy Purchase Program, which has acquired works by artists Sanford Biggers, Amoako Boafo, Ebony G. Patterson and Farah Al Qasimi.

The City of Miami Beach is pleased to announce the inaugural installation of  Elevate Española, a new dedicated art presentation site that will feature aerial installations suspended above the historic Española Way. The project will launch with an installation entitled Trapeze Contortionists by Miami local and Haitian-born artist Edouard Duval-Carrié. The work — which will present the silhouettes of 15 figures of dancers, cut from lightweight aluminum — will be unveiled on Monday, November 28 at 1pm, coinciding with the kick-off of Art Week Miami Beach.

One of the highlights of Art Week Miami Beach is the City-produced and curated No Vacancy, Miami Beach, a juried art competition that supports and celebrates mainly local artists, provokes critical discourse, and encourages the public to experience Miami Beach’s famed hotels as temporary art destinations in their own right. This year will be the largest to date, with an expanded program presenting 12 artists creating site-specific works at 12 iconic Miami Beach hotels. The installations will open Thursday, November 17 and be available to view through December 8, 2022.

The fourth edition of the Miami Beach Legacy Purchase Program will continue with Art Basel Miami Beach galleries participating in the 2022 Nova and Positions sectors. The Miami Beach Legacy Purchase Program seeks to strategically expand Miami Beach’s public art collection by purchasing an artwork that is reflective of our community spirit, aligns with the curatorial direction of our existing collection, reflects international artistic excellence, and is a valuable investment to our Art in Public Places collection.

For its third and final commission, Miami Beach OnStage! will present its largest commission to date, a 50' figurative sculpture for the 41st Street Corridor, entitled Starchild by artist duo FriendsWithYou. Starchild is the newest character in the artists' oeuvre, created as a symbol of light, power and nature. The work will be unveiled on Monday, November 28 at 5pm on the corner of Pinetree Drive and 41st Street.

Fragile Beauty explores the powerful allure of nature alongside its delicate state today. Featuring site-specific installations by Beatriz Chachamovits, Mira Lehr, and Lauren Shapiro, the exhibition brings together works by local Miami artists that reflect on climate change and human impact on our oceans, coral reefs, and rapidly shifting environment.

Lady Liberty will feature more than 20 works by Bonnie Lautenberg, spanning her artistic career, including photographs she took in Antarctica, Palm Beach, Cuba and New York, alongside her conceptual artworks. The exhibition is titled Lady Liberty in honor of the role women have played in championing freedom and will also include new works that have never been exhibited before.

From the Permanent Art Collection of the Miami-Dade Public Library System, Highlights, is an exhibition showcasing a sampling of the wide-ranging use of materials by artists featured in the Library’s Permanent Art Collection of over 7,000 pieces of artwork. The framed pieces and objects in the exhibit highlight the work of artists Damian Rojo, Tom Schmitt, Judith Page, Valeria Yamamoto, Purvis Young, Edwin Villasmil and Gustavo Oviedo, among others.

Acclaimed curator and author Pamela Golbin will be in conversation with French designer Jean-Louis Deniot, discussing his work, creative process, signature style, and exclusive projects. Deniot's distinctive worldwide commissions (penthouse apartments, sprawling villas, and custom constructions) surprise in their variety as well as their common thread—passion. Copies of Deniot's new book, Destinations: Jean-Louis Deniot, will be available for sale at a reception and signing after the talk.

Architect, designer, educator, photographer, sportsman, and author, Carlo Mollino was a remarkable protagonist of 20th-century Italian culture. Michelangelo Sabatino, co-author of Carlo Mollino: Architect and Storyteller, will present Mollino's most significant designs and identify the creative processes that generated his wide-ranging visual, tactile, and spatial experiences. Books will be available for sale at a reception and signing after the talk.

Street Shrines

The Wolfsonian–FIU celebrates Miami Art Week 2022 with Street Shrines, artist and activist Roberto Lugo’s first South Florida exhibition, unveiling new ceramic work by the in-demand potter as well as a wraparound exterior mural. Also on view will be the Cuban music and dance-driven Turn the Beat Around and the maps-inspired Plotting Power.

Turn the Beat Around

Rumba, conga, and Afro-Cuban jazz. Mambo, cha-cha-cha, and salsa. Turn the Beat Around revisits the artistic and innovative exchanges between musicians from Cuba and the U.S. during the 1930s to '60s, showcasing posters, record and sheet music covers, film clips, and audio from the era to bring to life the musical fusion found between cultures.

Plotting Power: Maps and the Modern Age

Mirrors of our loftiest dreams and deepest fears, maps draw literal lines between "you" and "me," "us" and "other," more often reflecting how we see it than how it is. This Wolfsonian collection exhibition follows the exploitation of geography in the first half of the 20th century, when the possibilities of travel and technology opened new horizons for global ambition.

The Betsy-South Beach announces exhibits for Miami Beach Art Week 2022, curated by Betsy co-owner Lesley Goldwasser. Works include photography by Tamary Kudita (Zimbabwe), Nadia Huggins (Trinidad/Tobago), and Eric Kroll (USA), a mixed media collection by Ray Tenorio (Cuba) and a dance work by Peter London (Trinidad/Tobago). Also exhibited is new work by conceptual multi-media artist Sri Prabha (India) as part of No Vacancy. The Betsy will also celebrate new artist books by Alessandro Sarno, Carlos Andres Cruz, and Eric Kroll.

Faena Art brings the Faena Prize for the Arts to Miami for the first time with an immersive large-scale installation at Faena Beach. Other Art Week highlights include a video series by Davide Quayola presented at the Faena Art Project Room and an unprecedented installation on the beach by Random International in partnership with Aorist. In addition, Faena Art will also feature new work by Antonia Right and Ruben Millares as part of No Vacancy and a sculpture by Petroc Sesti will be installed at the Faena Cathedral in collaboration with The ReeflLine.

Richard Orlinski Exhibit:
Lincoln Road District will further enhance its arts and culture experience by showcasing 12 giant, electrifying sculptures by French artist Richard Orlinski. The exhibit will run from November 2022 to March 2023.

Keith Haring + CityKids:
In 1986, Keith Haring worked with the CityKids organization and 1000 kids in NYC to create an 90′ tall mural titled “CityKids Speak On Liberty” comprised of Keith’s dark outlines of his iconic dancing figures and the Statue of Liberty. When asked why the statue’s arm was made from oddly curved lines, Haring’s off-the-cuff response was “because liberty is wobbly.” 36 years later… in 2022, liberty is not only still wobbly, but seemingly broken into many pieces as the US struggles with maintaining a sense of social cohesion and its cultural and political divisions appear to grow worse each year.

Over the course of Miami Art Week, “Because Liberty is Broken” will be displayed in the 640 Lincoln Road space and participants are invited to collaborate with HVY and CityKids to write directly onto the broken pieces of 3D version of the Haring’s torch from the original “City Kids Speak on Liberty” mural.

Urbanspace Lincoln Road Holiday Market:
Urbanspace Lincoln Road Holiday Market, the first national expansion of the beloved holiday pop-up market outside of New York City, is setting up shop in the Lincoln Road District, specifically at the intersection of Washington Avenue. The market will feature a variety of national and local pop-up shops and will run from Nov. 15, 2022 to Feb. 15, 2023, Monday through Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Antique & Collectable Market:
Located on the Lincoln Road District, the Antique & Collectible Market has become the largest Sunday social event in South Florida. The market takes place on the following Sundays (Nov. 13 & 27; Dec. 4, 11 & 18; Jan. 8, 22 & 29; Feb. 12, 19 & 26; April 16 & 30 & May 14), from 9a.m. to 6p.m., and offers loads of vintage goods including art, clothing and jewelry, plus designer and mid-century furniture.
