PosterFest: Design for Good 2019
April 27, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Date: Saturday, April 27, 2019
Time: 2–6pm
Location: The Wolfsonian–FIU @ 1001 Washington Avenue
The Wolfsonian–FIU is excited to announce that PosterFest: Design for Good returns for 2019 with a FREE afternoon devoted to raising awareness about South Florida’s HIV/AIDS crisis through one of the most powerful mediums of the modern age. Co-presented with AIGA Miami and the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County on Saturday, April 27, 2019, the festival fosters compassion, challenges misconceptions, and educates the public about the realities faced by those living with HIV. The topic is a critical one for Miami, where HIV rates are the highest in the nation.
The day’s festivities include a pop-up juried exhibition of work by finalists of AIGA’s poster-making design challenge paired with an installation of vintage AIDS awareness posters from the Wolfsonian collection by artists and collectives such as Keith Haring, Gran Fury, and James Victore. The selected contemporary designers will have the chance to give their concepts impact beyond the event, with the opportunity to adapt their designs for packaging on condoms distributed for free throughout Miami-Dade.
Visitors will also enjoy a library display of historic health material, play with poster design in digital and analog interactives, and engage with traditional printmaking techniques in hands-on make-and-take activities led by local printers. The day offers South Floridians a unique experiential exploration of both a pervasive, versatile art form and a startling statistic affecting our local community—all in the interest of encouraging empathy and inspiring designers to wield their artistic skills for positive social change.
